Mani has described yesterday's (April 7) rumours of a possible Stone Roses reunion as "total fantasy island."

The bassist, who angrily denied that the band were reuniting yesterday afternoon, went further when speaking to BBC News.

"It's total fantasy island gear," he said. "Two guys who haven't seen each for 15 years, like people do at funerals, came to pay respects to the bassist's mum and now all this."

Mani was referring to the basis of the initial newspaper report of a potential reunion. That story was hinged onIan Brown and John Squire recently meeting up at his mother's funeral.

It is believed to be the first time the two have met since the band's split in 1996.

Mani told NME yesterday that he was "disgusted that my personal grief has been invaded and hijacked by these nonsensical stories. It isn't true and isn't happening."

Stone Roses Reunion Rumour, Part The IV.... Stone Roses to Headline Reading & Leeds, Tour US, South America, and Asia...

Ok, I thought I might as well get in on the rumour-mongering whilst the going iss goot....

My source for the info about the Stone Roses headlining Reading & Leeds 2011, followed by an extensive US, South American, and Asian tour, is my active imagination and the dreams of millions....

I feel like I just got off a roller coaster or possibly woke up with a stranger in bed, who quickly proposed life-long partnership, then an hour later demanded a divorce and stormed out of my flat...

In the wee hours this morning, news broke via The Sun (should have known this info was suspect...) that the lads were getting back together, a la Los Pixies, who similarly had members who did not speak for over a decade after massive early success and much future promise, only to reunite years later to the delight of old fans and new fans who never got to see them the first time around. If only The Pixies/Pavement template for reunions could be followed by Ian & Crew....

but just a short time after we got "confirmation" from UK scenester Clint Boon, came the large bucket of icy cold water thrown by bassist Mani, pissed that the memory of his mother's funeral was besmirched by The Sun in order to sell a few extra copies of the morning fish wrap...

when Mani, playing the role of the psychotic lover, told us to, "...Fuck Off and leave it alone. It isn't true and isn't happening", did he REALLY mean he loved us and couldn't wait to see us on tour? I will note that he did tell us to "please" fuck off... See? That proves he DOES love us and wants to be with us...


I spent the morning listening to Ian's "The World is Yours" (2007 - great!) and "My Way" (2009 - pretty good, especially the first track "Stellify"), and then took the plunge in Stone Roses' greatest hits territory, just to see if they were as great as I remembered them to be.


If you never heard of The Stone Roses, (i.e. if you are American like me), listen to these five songs and you will be a Believer.


It would help if you took two hits of E first, then smoked a huge blunt, then collapsed into a bean bag chair in a comfortable room in front of a powerful stereo and play the following songs:


"I Wanna Be Adored"
"She Bangs The Drums" (does not refer to a groupie for The Drums)
"Waterfall"
"I Am The Resurrection"
"Fools Gold"


That's all you need and then you too will appreciate the awesomeness of The Stone Roses. As you're listening, feel free to imagine you are in Madchester in the early 90s going to New Order's Hacienda Club. Or imagine you are in London or San Francisco in 1967. The music is psychedelic, stoney, pretentious, intellectual, unnecessarily obtuse, naive, sweet, fey, shoe gazey, jangle poppy, Beatle-y... i mean, you've got to have a lot of balls to have songs (on your debut album no less...) called "I wanna be adored" AND "I am the Resurrection". Their debut was a sensation in the UK, unmatched until the Arctic Monkeys debut years later... The hysteria that greeted The Stone Roses was as ridiculous as the depth of grief later faced by fans when the bands fell apart, well short of what we knew they were capable of.


If only for "Fools Gold" they should be remembered forever. It's a 4-minute plus      jam of psychedelic funk and perhaps the most danceable song ever released by a guitar-based rock band. 


We'll always have the old Stone Roses. The question is whether we can have them again live AND if they'll produce any new tunes. 


The Stone Roses consist of four unique and idiosyncratic individuals. They often clashed, but it seems that the central relationship, and the one most fragile, is between singer Ian Brown and guitarist John Squire. If these two guys can be friends again and manage to work together once more, the punters will be in for a treat.

New rumours about The Stone Roses possibly reforming in 2011 have been quashed by bassist Mani.

This morning (April 7) a UK tabloid newspaper claimed that the band, who split in 1996, were set to get back together for gigs this year.

The report was based on singer Ian Brown and John Squire recently meeting again for what is believed to be the first time since the split. Now Mani has told NME that reports of a band reunion are false.

"I'm disgusted that my personal grief has been invaded and hijacked by these nonsensical stories," he said, referring to the fact that Brown and Squire met up at his mother's funeral.

He added: "Two old friends meeting up after 15 years to pay their respects to my mother does not constitute the reformation of The Stone Roses. Please fuck off and leave it alone. It isn't true and isn't happening."

The band released two albums in their career. Brown has pursued a solo career since, while Squiremoved into painting after formingThe Seahorses and releasing solo material. Mani currently plays in Primal Scream.

First, (this morning) it was just "The Sun" reporting an anonymous source, now Inspiral Carpets' Clint Boon "confirms" via Twitter and NME reports that it's "happening"... if this previously wasn't true, let's hope the momentum from these reports makes the reunion inevitable...

"The Sun", a UK tabloid owned by the Monty Burns-like Rupert Murdoch, brings us news that The Stone Roses, one of the most beloved British bands of 90s, have buried the axe and are gearing up for a reunion tour. Could it be? Those of us who missed them the first time around would love a second chance.... Their debut album was fantastic, as was the single "Fool's Gold" which is now often included on the first CD. After that came the lawsuits and hassles with their label which put them on hold during their prime, famously leading the squabbles between bandmembers, especially singer Ian Brown and guitarist extraordinaire John Squire, who hadn't spoken for years until, according the The Sun, it all came together recently at bassist Mani's mother's funeral in Manchester.

The Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, etc. put Manchester back on the map in the 90s as "Madchester" became known suddenly, again, for producing the most cutting edge rock n roll, as well as a raging X-fueled club and dance scene. To London's eternal shame.

I happened to be in England around the time of Stone Roses fever in the early 90s and so I checked them out. I had these cassette singles and the album I played constantly. I never saw them in concert, but I was bummed when they broke up, and even before that, like many, I was disappointed by the "Second Coming" album.  Seems they were already basically broken up by then.

People in the band have had success with solo projects and other bands, but everyone has been hoping they would one day get back together. That seemed quite unlikely until this report came out. I hope it's not just some fantasy cooked up by some bored reporter, stringing together some rumors and anecdotes and gossip into a "news story".

No doubt a Stone Roses reunion tour would be lucrative and well-attended.

Ian's solo work has been excellent. I enjoyed 2007's "The World Is Yours" very much. It had UK chart success, but barely registered a blip on the American radar screen as far as I know. It's a shame that the album's anti-war duet between Ian and Sinead O'Connor, "Illegal Attacks" didn't get more airplay in the US. I saw Ian perform in Japan around that time and he was great. He did a nice mixture of new stuff, old stuff, and Stone Roses classics (which, of course, were the songs the crowd freaked out for most.

Well, I hope they tour and hopefully they make it to the US so I don't have to fly to England to see them, although I could try to see Pete Doherty/Libertines/Babyshambles on the same trip, as Pete still can't get an American visa (too many drug arrests and not enough lawyers apparently.... he flew to JFK last summer to do a one-off show with Sean Lennon but was turned away upon landing..... oh the indignity! Shame on you, America! The boy's a genius. So he's gotten in trouble a few times. Geniuses do that....)
