Sorry to see actor Giancarlo Esposito leave "Breaking Bad".... but he does leave us with one of the best bad guys ever... a comeback next season? if anyone could survive a blast like that, it would be Gustavo Fring...
I wondered more about Gus' back story. The "German conglomerate" - were Gus' family members Nazi war criminals who fled to South America? And later cossied up to the Chilean dictator Pinochet while consolidating their hold on all aspects of South American organized crime? Giancarlo Esposito is Black and Italian, but the show didn't explain Gus' Blackness (although Tio referred to it). There are people of African descent sprinkled all over Latin America, especially in the Caribbean and Atlantic (not so much in Chile but...). Did Gus have a Black ancestor or were they Latinos with darker skin? It seems that Gus was a "confirmed bachelor". Did this encourage his family to send him to Mexico and New Mexico to get rid of him/expand operations out of shame (or at least not object too strongly to his own plans to leave South America)? Gus spends 20 years plotting his revenge against Tio Hector and Don Eladio for killing his partner. The depth of that passion for revenge implies he cared quite deeply about his friend. Gus' family connections kept him from getting killed by the Cartel (but did not protect him from Hector's disdain: "South Americans.... dirty, dirty people..."). Gail, the other meth cook, also appears to be an eccentric confirmed bachelor. How close were he and Gus?
Many questions, which may never be answered....
