Bob Mould reads, sings and reminisces at Largo at the Coronet

Bob Mould, formerly of Sugar and Husker Du, reads and signs at Largo

On Wednesday night at Largo at the Coronet, singer, songwriter, post-punk icon and former World Wrestling Federation scriptwriter Bob Mould shared his ideas, both verbally and musically, on his work and life. Mould was touring in support of his new memoir, "See a Little Light: The Trail of Rage and Melody," and Times book critic David L. Ulin was in attendance. Writes Ulin over at Jacket Copy
"...the title comes from a song on his 1989 album "Workbook." He opened with the song, playing solo on a blue Stratocaster, then sat down to read selections from his book. The prose was adequate, some incidents more interesting than others ... but let's be honest: Prose was not why we were here.
To his credit, Mould seemed to understand that; he chose passages that had to do with songwriting, beginning with his state of mind after the 1988 implosion of Hüsker Dü. In the wake of that, he began to write the songs that would eventually become "Workbook," and after his first reading, he performed a few, among them "Lonely Afternoon" and "Wishing Well."
This was the pattern of the evening: Dip into the book, talk about his history, then play music that reflected what he'd read. He did four Sugar songs (the highlight of the night, especially the effervescent ear candy of "If I Can't Change Your Mind") and closed with a brief Husker set, including "I Apologize."

Arctic Monkeys are set to release a new B-side featuring a guest appearance fromMiles Kane.

The track, which is titled 'Little Illusion Machine (Wirral Riddler)', will appear as the B-side to the band's new single 'The Hellcat Spangled Shalalala', which comes out on August 15.

'Little Illusion Machine (Wirral Riddler)' is credited to Miles Kane and The Death Ramps, with the latter being a pseudonym the Sheffield band have recorded under in the past.

'The Hellcat Spangled Shalalala' is the second track to be taken from 'Suck It And See', after the earlier release of 'Don't Sit Down 'Cause I've Moved Your Chair'.

Miles Kane's association with the Arctic Monkeys is lengthy. He was part of The Last Shadow Puppets with the band's frontman Alex Turner and has appeared live with them a number of times, most recently during their headline slot at T In The Park.

After they headline V Festival in late August, the Arctic Monkeys are next scheduled to undertake a full UK arena tour. The Vaccines and Smith Westerns will support them on all dates.

I haven't been this sad in a long time, about anyone in this business. I tried to go grocery shopping for my family, and I was walking like a ghost in the aisles. I could think about nobody but Amy.

When I saw her two weeks ago on TV and she was all drugged out, drinking and stuff, I said, "Damn it, damn it, damn it, damn it! Don't become like I was 20 years ago! I cleaned up. You gotta clean up!" And two weeks later, she's dead. I'm devastated.

Every time I looked at her, it was like I was looking at myself. She had my beehive, my eyeliner, my attitude. She had such a great soul in her voice and her lyrics were so amazing that I couldn't help but sing one of her songs. I was so happy to see an artist like Amy, because she reminded me of my youth. And she loved girl groups. Damn it! I thought she would carry on.

When I was in my 20s, I was a lost girl – drinking, not knowing what to do or where to go. I never did drugs – like, "No way, you're not gonna put a needle in my arm!" – but drinking is just as bad. In the Sixties, everyone was doing drugs, and I lost many people in the business. I knew Jimi Hendrix. I used to play with him down in the Village. When I had a Number One hit all over the world, the Rolling Stones were my opening act. I was around all the druggies, but my mother also traveled with us, wherever I was. She was a buffer so I didn't see all of the bad stuff.

You can't go around people who drink or do drugs, even family members. I learned that 20 years ago in A.A. I had two boys, and, when they were four and five, we moved to Connecticut. In New York, there were liquor stores on every other corner, and I didn't need that. I knew enough to leave that. Now I don't drink. I don't do anything but my shows and take care of my kids.

Amy came to my show in London about six months ago, and she was so shy. She was hiding behind somebody, but I could see the hairstyle, and I knew she was there. That was all I needed. When I sang "Back to Black," I could see the tears in her eyes, and there were tears in mine.
As told to Matthew Perpetua.
Ronnie Spector is an icon of Sixties girl group pop, and a major influence on the sound and visual style of the late Amy Winehouse. Spector – the lead singer of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees the Ronettes – performs Winehouse’s hit "Back to Black" regularly in concert. Two years ago, Spector went into the studio to record her rendition with noted songwriter and producer Richard Gottheher and hip-hop producer Phenom. The song, debuting here, will soon be released as a charity single, with proceeds going toDaytop Village substance abuse treatment centers.

Stephen Malkmus "Senator"

http://pitchfork.com/news/42761-new-stephen-malkmus-and-the-jicks-senator/

The toxins American made
Weapons-class gray sludge for migrants
Dioxin the chemical sunset
The number one subset of all

I know what the senator wants
What the senator wants is a blow job
I know what the senator wants
What the senator wants is a blow job

Panic in the antechamber
Motion to impeach
Cattle prod the working classes
There's some things you can't teach

Cause we're fading fast
Like a stone
Come fading fast
Into the picture you own

Little Nicky Nicky Nicky
Down in Ocean Beach he's strumming
He used to carry his guitar around his back
And he'd just walk to certain places
Look for gigs to illuminate

Smoking weed in our truck
The cops pull up
How can they not know?
It was so so so so so so invisible

Heavy heavy heavy heavy heavy smelter
Fuck it!

Is it funny enough?
The serious business is void enough
My duty to the Republik
Is to use double speak because the Halo's off

I know what the senator wants
What the senator wants is a blow job
I know what everyone wants
What everyone wants is a blow job

Baby steps up Everest
So much trash to burn
We will stick it where the sun don't shine
As the world turns...

Your star's fading fast
Like a stone
Come fading fast
Into the picture you own

Faded fast
You are fading fast (x2)
You are gone
You are gone

(Look out)
