"Take It Easy...... but Take It!"

Tom Morello supporting striking public workers in Wisconsin, February 2011....

Hats off to Tom Morello, guitarist extraordinaire from Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave, and Street Sweeper Social Club....

Surely one of the finest guitarist around.... did you see him solo-ing circles around Springsteen at the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame concert?

Impressive.

Or this turn at Coachella 2010 that i shot:

perhaps the only thing more impressive than Tom Morello's guitar work is his political work. I doubt there is anyone in music today more passionate about their political beliefs and none more willing to declare his beliefs loudly, succinctly, and intelligently.... Morello accomplishes this, amazingly enough, without ever sounding self-righteous or self-congratulatory...

In Rage, Zack got most of the credit as the "political spokesman", yet he couldn't get along with his own bandmates. How can we change the world if we don't love our friends?

The Ghost of Tom Joad...

Henry Fonda played Tom Joad, a simple migrant farmworker who advocated for social justice in the film version of John Steinbeck's "The Grapes of Wrath" (you were supposed to read it in high school but never did...)

"Well, maybe… it’s like Casey says, a fellow ain’t got a soul of his own, just little piece of a big Soul… The One Big Soul that belongs to everybody…. Then… it don’t matter…. I'll be all around, in the dark… I'll be everywhere - wherever you can look. Wherever there's a fight, so hungry people can eat, I'll be there. Wherever there's a cop beatin' up a guy, I'll be there. I'll be in the way guys yell when they're mad.. I'll be in the way kids laugh when they're hungry and they know supper's ready. And when the people are eatin' the stuff they raise, and livin' in the houses they build… I'll be there, too..."

The Ghost of old Tom Joad plays cards with Woody Guthrie and John Steinbeck, and waits impatiently for us to get our shit together...

Tom Morello, as singer/songwriter The Nightwatchman, joins their voices... is that Voice, crying out in the American wilderness of apathy, self-absorption, consumerism, and resignation....

Long may that Voice ring out...

Hey Americans, time to start marching again... not marching off to war, marching off to peace....
