Cool, "New" Song: "Run Of The Mill" from George Harrison Massive 50th Anniversary Boxset of "All Things Must Past" Coming in August; With Outtakes, Alternate Takes, Jam Sessions...

As The Beatles were breaking up in early 1970, George Harrison began recording what would become his three-disc opus, All Things Must Pass, feat. the smash hit "My Sweet Lord". 

Bob Dylan's influence appears on the album's first track "I'd Have You Any Time", a Dylan-Harrison collaboration, as well as on Dylan's "If Not For You" (which appeared here before Dylan's version was even recorded). The boxset contains two outtakes which are additional Dylan-Harrison collaborations: "Nowhere To Go" and "I Don't Want To Do It" (later recorded by George for the 1985 soundtrack of Porky's Revenge).

Produced by Phil Spector (some would say "overproduced", which this new mix by Dhani Harrison attempts to correct to some extent), the album featured Ringo Starr on drums, Klaus Voomann on bass, Billy Preston on keyboards, as well as Derek & The Dominos (with Eric Clapton), Badfinger, Peter Frampton, Gary Wright, Gary Brooker, Bobby Keys, Pete Drake, Dave Mason, and Alan White. 

It was as dramatic a Declaration of Independence as rock had yet seen. It immediately brought Harrison from out of the shadow of Lennon and McCartney and established him as a major solo artist. This boxset offers a glimpse into that process.

America's new punkrock sweethearts, The Linda Lindas, rocked Jimmy Kimmel last night with their mega-hit "Racist, Sexist Boy", followed by "Claudia Kishi"; proving they are no one-hit wonders.

They've done a few covers of punk classics, but isn't it obvious they would do a killer cover of 7 Seconds' "Not Just Boys Fun" (from the legendary 1984 release The Crew, now celebrated with a deluxe edition on Trust Records)?

Lisa Simpson makes a new imaginary friend Quilloughby, a moody singer from the 80s band The Snuffs, who by 2021 becomes an overweight racist/bigot (sadly, much like real-life Morrissey). Team Morrissey cried foul against The Simpsons, which only sounded pathetic, along with the news that Morrissey has a new album recorded, but no label to put it out, as he was dropped by BMG last November, largely due to his racist & bigoted statements, which have alienated many former fans. We're just glad that The Smith's Johnny Marr is still cool, still rocking, and NOT a racist or bigot...

The Black Keys Pay Tribute To The Late, Great Bluesman R.L. Burnside

Long live R.L. Burnside! The Black Keys new album Delta Kream (May 14/Nonesuch) is a tribute to the old school sound of the Mississippi hill country blues artists. R.L. Burnside, Junior Kimbrough, Mississippi Fred McDowell, John Lee Hooker, Big Joe Williams are all here. 

Kenny Brown, R.L. Burnside's "adopted son", plays slide guitar on the album, and can be seen above performing "Crawling Kingsnake" with The Black Keys on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, and later on "Going Down South":

Manchester Orchestra "Keel Timing" from the forthcoming album The Million Masks of God (April 30th). We've already heard another single from the album, "Bed Head", and now there's an acoustic version of it on YouTube.

Garbage "The Men Who Rule The World" from their new album No Gods No Masters (June 11)

Joe Strummer Assembly. Nice to hear The Clash's Joe Strummer again in this retrospective from the late George Harrison's Dark Horse label. Great versions of "I Fought The Law" and "Junco Partner". Tim Armstrong (Operation Ivy, Rancid) befriended Strummer and released his final albums with The Mescaleros on Hellcat records. Another Strummer compilation, Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros: The Hellcat Years, contains selections from those albums, as well as tracks from the Acton concert, recorded a month and a half before Joe's untimely death. In addition to many of Joe's best-known songs, the Acton show included three numbers with Mick Jones on guitar, the first time the former Clash bandmates had played together for some time.

Bonnie "Prince" Billy and his frequent collaborator Matt Sweeney will be releasing the album Superwolves on April 30, 2021. "My Blue Suit" is from that album, a follow-up to 2005's Superwolf.

They've announced these four shows in California for June 2021:

Femi Kuti & Made Kuti Legacy - Fela Kuti's son Femi and Femi's son Made collaborate on this new exciting album that sounds as if it were already well within the Fela canon.

Black Country, New Road For The First Time - Great, high-energy music for the 21st century

The Weather Station Ignorance - This album is getting lots of attention and although it's much more pop than I usually like, it's definitely worth listening to.

Dinosaur Jr. Sweep It Into Space - 90s indie rockers drop a new album that's really good!

Steve Earle & The Dukes J.T. - Steve Earle's loving tribute to his late son, singer/songwriter Justin Townes Earle.

Vampire Weekend 40:42 - Consists of two songs, each 20:21 long, full of guitar antics and meditations on 2021. I'm not sure what it is, but I kind of like it, and I haven't been a huge fan of them previously.

David Bowie "Tryin' To Get To Heaven"/"Mother" A Bob Dylan cover and a Lennon cover, neither of which we've previously heard. Surprisingly, Bowie provides Dylan's "Tryin' To Get To Heaven" with a lot more heart than his cover of John Lennon's "Mother"

Bill Callahan & Bonnie "Prince" Billy "The Night of Santiago" - The series of covers from Bill and Will (this one written by Leonard Cohen) coming about once a week lately, is fantastic. Check it out on bandcamp.com
