Best New Music: October 2018 Playlist

Looking forward to forthcoming releases from:

Kurt Vile, Bottle It In (Matador, October 12)

Richard Ashcroft, Natural Rebel (BMG, October 19)

Will Oldham (AKA Bonnie "Prince" Billy), Songs Of Love And Horror (Drag City, October 19)

Jeff Tweedy, Warm (dBpm, November 30), Wilco frontman's new solo album

Currently Enjoying:

Jim JamesUniform Clarity. New unstripped versions of the songs from this year's Uniform Distortion. I prefer the full band versions of these songs. This one is for superfans only.

Joe StrummerJoe Strummer 001. A retrospective of Joe's work without The Clash

Seasick SteveCan U Cook?. A bit of a departure for the retro blues rocker. These songs seek to combine traditional and modern sounds. Interesting.

Titus AndronicusHome Alone on Halloween (EP). Nice version of Bob Dylan's "Only A Hobo" and a couple of new songs from Jersey's greatest newish indie rock band

Courtney Barnett, "Small Talk". Aussie rockers' latest song. From the new compilation 10 Years Of Mom+Pop

Riz MC, "Magambo". Loved actor Riz Ahmed in HBO's The Night Of (2016). His raps are full of clever political and cultural references and poignant timely ripostes regarding our current situation.

The Louvin Brothers, Love & Wealth: The Lost Recordings

Reverend Gary Davis, New Blues and Gospel and Lord I Wish I Could See. Two albums recorded in 1971, a year before The Reverend's death. Vinyl only.

Gene Clark, Back Street Mirror (EP). Vinyl only. Byrds co-founder's solo rarities, some featuring Hugh Masekela

Random Obsession:

Joseph SpenceGlory, and Folk Guitar: Bahaman Ballads and Rhyming Spirituals w/John Roberts & Frederick McQueen, and The Complete Folkways Recordings 1958. Last August, The New Yorker did a nice piece on Bahamian guitarist extraordinaire Joseph Spence (1910 - 1984). His guttural scat singing is an acquired taste, but no one can dispute his incredible dexterity and virtuosity on the guitar.

Heavy Rotation:
