DO I WANNA KNOW? - ARCTIC MONKEYS

Have you got colour in your cheeks?
Do you ever get that fear that you can’t shift the tide that sticks around like summat in your teeth?
Hide some aces up your sleeve
Have you no idea that you’re in deep?
I dreamt about you nearly every night this week
How many secrets can you keep?
Cause there’s this tune I’ve found that makes me think of you somehow
And I play it on repeat until I fall asleep
Spilling drinks on my settee

(Do I wanna know?)
If this feeling flows both ways
(Sad to see you go)

Sorta hoping that you’d stay
(Baby we both know)
That the nights were mainly made for saying things that you can’t say tomorrow day

Crawling back to you
Ever thought of calling when you’ve had a few?
Cause I always do
Maybe I’m too busy being yours to fall for somebody new
Now I’ve thought it through
Crawling back to you

So have you got the guts?
Been wondering if your heart’s still open, and if so I wanna know what time it shuts
Simmer down and pucker up
I’m sorry to interrupt
It’s just I’m constantly on the cusp of trying to kiss you
But I dunno if you feel the same as I do
But we could be together if you wanted to

(Do I wanna know?)
If this feeling flows both ways
(Sad to see you go)
Was sorta hoping that you’d stay
(Baby we both know)
That the nights were mainly made for saying things that you can’t say tomorrow day

Crawling back to you
Ever thought of calling when you’ve had a few?
Cause I always do
Maybe I’m too busy being yours to fall for somebody new
Now I’ve thought it through
Crawling back to you

(Do I wanna know?)
If this feeling flows both ways
(Sad to see you go)
Was sorta hoping that you’d stay
(Baby we both know)
That the nights were mainly made for saying things that you can’t say tomorrow day

(Do I wanna know?)
Too busy being yours to fall
(Sad to see you go)
Ever thought of calling darling?
(Do I wanna know?)
Do you want me crawling back to you?

ThisSmallPlanet Review: Parquet Court live at the Doug Fir, Portland, June 12, 2013 (with photos & videos)

Brooklyn-based Parquet Courts played at Portland's Doug Fir last Wednesday (June 12, 2013).

They are currently on tour in support of their breakthrough album Light Up Gold.

Here's Andrew and Austin jamming like crazy on the final song of the evening, Stoned and Starving....

The set list...

I generally don't like the low light of the Doug Fir, and it's hell on photos and videos, especially for those of us using regular consumer-model devices. And I prefer videos that show close ups of the lead singer as opposed to distant shots of the whole band, but in the case of Parquet Courts, the interplay between guitarists Andrew and Austin is so vital to the sound that it pays to see both of them at the same time, with Sean on bass in between them, and Max on drums not-too-visible in the back.

The sound is pretty good though, and the guitar solos, feedback, and distortion are alone worth the price of admission.

Pixies Break Up (Again)

The Pixies have broken up for a second time.

The first time, frontman Black Francis famously sent a terse fax in 1993 to other band members, informing them of the decision to disband the group.

This time, bass player Kim Deal has pulled the plug.

Here are two videos I shot during a Pixies show in Oakland in 2009:

The Pixies released this statement on their Facebook page today (June 14, 2013):

  • We are sad to say that Kim Deal has decided to leave the Pixies. We are very proud to have worked with her on and off over the last 25 years. Despite her decision to move on, we will always consider her a member of the Pixies, and her place will always be here for her. We wish her all the best.

Black Francis, Joey Santiago and David Lovering

    ————————————————————————————————————

Any true Pixies fan can't help but feeling disappointed today... And make no mistake, much of what we think of as indie music today and the indie music aesthetic comes directly from The Pixies....

We loved seeing the reunion tours.

One of the concert highlights of my life was seeing the reformed Pixies playing at Coachella in the California desert in 2004.

Although I had listened to The Pixies for years, I had never seen them live during their first iteration. Many thousands of hardcore fans, we saw them together for the first time at Coachella. I subsequently saw them several other times and loved it each time. That music is classic (specifically Come On Pilgrim/Surfer Rosa and Doolittle)....

BUT WE ALWAYS HOPED DEEP DOWN INSIDE FOR A NEW ALBUM...............

And Kim was always the obstacle to that, always placing the interests of The Breeders (who she founded with twin sister Kelley Deal) before those of The Pixies.

They seemed to get along so well on the tours that much hope was generated that new material would be forthcoming and there were a few new things... a single, Bam Thwok plopped on iTunes without fanfare in 2004, a (great) Warren Zevon cover Ain't That Pretty At All, and a Frank Black cover, live acoustic at Newport, All Around The World....

But I was among the fans who were certain that any album of new material featuring songs and singing by Black Francis and Kim Deal, with the singular crisp guitar licks of Joey Santiago, the thunderous thud of Kim's bass and David Lovering's steady beat couldn't help but BE GREAT....

Efforts were made, from what we heard, but it was not to be.

Perhaps the final straw was Kim's decision to hit the reunion circuit with The Breeders for the 20th anniversary of their breakthrough album Last Splash, dooming any chance for a new Pixies album (or tour) for another year or so....

The break up announcement doesn't seem to hold rancor, so who knows if somewhere down the line if there could be a new album or new tour, but for now, we'll have to satisfy ourselves with the memories and dreams of what may have been...

ThisSmallPlanet Review: Mikal Cronin Rocks Wreckless Eric's "(I'd Go The) Whole Wide World" Live in Portland!

San Francisco has had a burgeoning psychedelic garage rock scene for the past few years, featuring such standouts as Ty Segall, Thee Oh Sees, The Sic Alps, and others (who all seem to know and like each other).

Ty Segall's bass player and old pal Mikal Cronin has just released his second solo album and is on a tour to promote the release with an excellent 4-piece band who did a great show last night in North Portland at Mississippi Studios.

For the encore, they played a raucous version of Wreckless Eric's classic "(I'd Go The) Whole Wide World".
